HOUSTON, Texas - Behind a double-double from Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC), the University of Houston women's basketball team won a 74-63 exhibition victory over the visiting Houston Jaguars, Monday in Hofheinz Pavilion.
Meyers' 21 points and game-high 10 rebounds led the Cougars, who tallied a 51.7 percent shooting performance from the floor. The Cougars were 31 for 60 including a 17 for 32 (.531) clip in the second half.
UH pushed an eight-point halftime lead to 10 in the first minute of the second half off an offensive rebound and putback by Meyers. Over the next eight minutes, the Jaguars had a 19-9 run that knotted the game up at 46 apiece with 11:43 left.
The visitors pulled out to a three-point advantage before UH tied it up at 50-50 with 8:53 to go. The teams traded buckets over the next minute with UH shutting the door for good on a 22-11 run over the final 7:43 of the game to take the 74-63 win.
Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) and Emily Fryters (Adelaide, S.A., Australia/Concordia College) also contributed to UH's major advantage on the boards. UH outrebounded the Jaguars 55-25, including a 19-7 margin on the offensive glass. Behind Meyers' 10 boards, Hawkins grabbed nine while Fryters added eight.
Nakazi Glover (Brookshire, Texas/Bellaire HS) and Jasmin Moore (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek HS) also found double figures in scoring, tallying 10 and 11 points, respectively.
The Cougars took a 35-27 lead into the break behind 14 first-half points from Meyers. After a dismal first-half shooting effort against EV1.net, UH shot at a 50-percent clip (14-28) from the floor in the opening stanza against the Jaguars.
The two squads traded buckets to open the game with UH jumping out to a 10-3 lead with 16:44 left on the clock. Meyers tallied eight of the Cougars' first 10 points.
UH led by as many as nine at the 10:13 mark, 21-12, before an 11-2 Jaguars run pulled the visitors even at 23 apiece with 6:25 left in the half. UH pulled a 10-0 run over the next 3:58 to lead 33-23 with 2:26 remaining. The Jaguars had a quick 4-0 run before a layup by Meyers with 1:14 left closed out the scoring for the half with UH on top 35-27.
The Jaguars were led by three players in double digits with former UH standout Joanne Overstreet leading the way. Overstreet tallied 24 points featuring a 7 for 9 performance from the charity stripe. Brandy Jones added 13 while Felicia West had 10 points. Overstreet and Ischomi Singleton tied with a team-high five rebounds.
UH closed out the exhibition season with a 1-1 mark. The Cougars hit the road to open the regular season, taking on Big Ten foe Wisconsin, Friday at 7 p.m. CST. Following that contest, UH returns home to take on Long Beach State, Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hofheinz.
