HOUSTON - The Houston volleyball team is finally rolling, winners of their last four outings, the Cougars made quick work of the Lamar Cardinals Tuesday night at home, winning 3-0 for the third straight time.
With three wins last week to open a six game home stand, the Cougars have held court as they have defeated their first four opponents and have done it by going 12-1 in games played.
A key contributor to the success of the team over the last four games has been middle hitter senior Loure Dews.
Dews has led the team in kills in three of the four matches during the home stand, including her match high 15 kill performance against Lamar that saw her hit .462 and pick up six blocks against the Cardinals.
Her second block of the night moved her into the No. 7 spot on the Cougars' career total blocks list. Dews is already No. 4 on the all-time block assists list and No. 8 on the blocks solo list.
Sophomores Kelly McAnelly and Becca Sartori did their part to secure the Cougar victory, registering 12 kills apiece. Sartori also added four blocks on the evening, and McAnelly added nine digs.
The Cougars played tough defense to compliment the solid offense of the evening, with 10 blocks in the match and junior libero Jaci Gonzalez led the way with 23 digs. The Cougar spikers also held Lamar to -.034 and -.022 hitting performances in the first two games, respectively.
On offense, Houston hit .259 on the night to the Cardinals' .088, and out killed them 47-34.
Games one and two were taken easily by the Cougars 30-17 in Game 1 and 30-18 in Game 2. In the second game, Houston trailed in the early going 4-7, but rallied behind a 9-2 Cougar run to take the lead at 13-9 and never looked back.
Game 3 was a bit tougher as the Cardinals played with a lot of intensity and out killed the Cougars 19-14. However, Houston made only one attack error to Lamar's seven and had only one service error to the Cardinals' five. The Cougars came away with Game 3 in a 30-23 victory to close out the match and secure their fourth consecutive win.
Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center the Cougars get back at it looking to push their four-game winning streak to five when conference for TCU (17-8, 7-3) visits in a 7:00 p.m. start.
