HOUSTON - Playing in its own Homecoming match, the Cougar volleyball team posted four double-doubles against TCU at the Athletics/Alumni Center on Saturday night but it wasn't enough to pull out a win as the Cougars fell 3-2 to the Frogs.
With their stretch of six home matches coming to a close, the Cougars came into tonight's match up winners of their last four outings. The loss snapped the team's longest winning streak of the season and put Houston at 5-6 in Conference USA while TCU improves to 8-3.
The Cougars' sophomore Kelly McAnelly led all players with 21 kills and picked up 12 digs, junior Kariny Ritter added 20 kills with 19 digs, junior Jennifer Hohl had 33 assists with 15 digs, and senior Mirela Vasconellos chipped in 30 assists and 16 digs.
Houston opened up the match with a 30-27 win in Game 1 sparked by a TCU blocking error that gave Houston the lead at 27-26, and opened the door for Houston to take the 1-0 lead.
Houston led by as many as four points in the second game, but the Frongs managed to tie it up at 23-23. The two teams battled back and forth through the remainder of the game but TCU pulled away on the final possessions to tie up the match at one apiece heading into the break.
After the break, Houston struggled to get the offense running and after standing at 6-6, the Frongs went on a 12-1 run that stretched their lead to 18-7, and Houston never recovered, dropping Game 3 by a score of 30-19.
Facing the possibility of losing the match in Game 4, the Cougars fell behind the Frogs after TCU went on a 6-1 run to take the lead at 16-13. Houston fought back though, as junior Jaci Gonzalez picked up nine digs, and McAnelly, Ritter and senior Loure Dews each posted four kills, to come back and take the lead at 28-27.
With a critical rally underway, Dews and Ritter made a huge stop for the Cougars by blocking a TCU attack and pushed the Houston lead to 29-27 and allowed the team to close out the game and force a decisive Game 5.
The final game went back and forth, and tied at 12-12, TCU managed to put together a 3-0 rally to close out the match in a 15-12 victory in the final game.
Houston closes out the 2004 home schedule this next week when city-rival Rice comes the Athletics/Alumni Center on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
