Volleyball falls in four to Memphis

HOUSTON, Texas - Despite taking game one 30-26, The University of Houston volleyball team fell in four games (4-1) Saturday night to the Memphis Tigers 26-30, 30-26, 30-21, 30-25.
The Cougars came out on fire in game one hitting .400 as a team and receiving 10 kills from freshman Kelly McAnelly who hit an impressive .588 in the game.
The final three games were another story for McAnelly and the Cougars as Tiara Gilkey and Brittany Barnett got hot for the Tigers offense. Gilkey finished with a game high 21 kills and Barnett finished with 19 to lead Memphis to the win. The Tigers are now 18-2 for the season and 2-1 in Conference USA play.
The Cougars, who were led by Cinthia Piva's 20 kills with a .500 hitting percentage and Loure Dews 18 kills and .400 hitting percentage, fall to 5-3 on the season and 1-3 in C-USA play. McAnelly finished with 17 kills, Mirela Vasconcellos dished out 56 assists while Jaci Gonzalez finished with a game high 17 digs.
The Cougars will be in action again Wednesday night when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs in Forth Worth at 7 p.m.
