Cougars Pick Up Wins Over Centenary and Louisiana Tech

BEAUMONT, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team is off to a perfect start, as it defeated Centenary and Louisiana Tech in the first day of the Lamar Cardinal Classic.
The Cougars, who posted a 16-11 record last year, defeated Centenary 30-20, 30-14, 30-20, in the teams' first-ever meeting. UH held Centenary to only 20 assists and 22 kills in all three games. Louisiana Tech battled back in the third and fourth games, but the Cougars came through to win in five games, 30-20, 30-19, 24-30, 23-30, 15-9.
Senior Jenny Tanneberger led the Cougar offense with 43 kills on the day, posting 19 against Centenary and 24 against Louisiana Tech. Tanneberger, a 2002 All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection, also added 14 digs and two solo blocks in the efforts.
Houston native and Syracuse transfer Laura Koster made her debut as a Cougar, adding 14 kills and four digs against Centenary and 19 kills and 18 digs in the Louisiana Tech contest. Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek added 24 kills on the day and led the team against Centenary with a .348 hitting percentage.
Donna Sellen and Mirela Vasconcellos shared the Cougars' setting duties and combined for 48 assists in the first match. Sellen led the way against the Lady Techsters with 57 assists and 10 digs. Vasconcellos contributed 19 assists and three service aces against Centenary.
Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar defense with 17 digs against Centenary and 15 in the Louisiana Tech contest.
Competition will continue tomorrow morning as UH battles Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m. and host Lamar at 7 p.m.
