HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball head coach Joe Curl recently announced the early signing of three athletes to National Letters of Intent. The signees include two junior college transfers and a high school senior who will add depth to the forward and center positions.
"This is the most dominant post class we've signed since my tenure at the University of Houston," Curl said. "The most positive part is that these signature players will make an immediate impact in the Lady Cougar basketball program."
Cynecia Robinson (Pasadena, Texas-Trinity Valley CC) joins the Cougars as a sophomore at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where she is averaging 8.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. The Cardinals, who finished 32-4 and 3rd in the NJCAA National Tournament last year, are off to an 14-0 start and ranked #4 in the NJCAA. Robinson, a 6-5 center, originally signed with Houston out of Dobie High and was also recruited by LSU and Memphis.
Sancho Lyttle (St. Vincent Island-Clarendon JC) will add even more depth to the post position. Lyttle, a 6-4 center, is a sophomore at Clarendon College in Claredon, Texas, averaging 26.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. She is currently rated one of the top three junior college players in the nation. Lyttle, a native of St. Vincent Island in the east Caribbean, was also recruited by Washington State and Alabama.
Tamara Taylor (Longview, Texas-Longview H.S.) will join the Lady Cougar squad as a true freshman in 2003. Taylor, a 6-0 forward, is averaging 20.0 points and 11.0 rebounds at Longview. She was also recruited by TCU, Memphis and Stephen F. Austin.
Houston (5-3, 0-0 C-USA) is led by All-American guard Chandi Jones, who is leading Conference USA in scoring with 27.4 points per game. Action will return to Hofheinz Pavilion as the Lady Cougars face No. 17 Georgia Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.
