TCU hit a total of 11 three-pointers in the game - seven of which came in the first half -- and overpowered Houston from tip-off as the Horned Frogs won their second straight Conference USA match-up and the Lady Cougars dropped their second straight by a final of 78-53 on Sunday (Jan. 13) afternoon at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Ft. Worth, Texas.
After TCU scored the first basket, the Lady Cougars and Horned Frogs began a physical battle on the court. They went back-and-forth in scoring until the Horned Frogs ran away with the lead in hitting four three-pointers within the final five minutes of the first half and carried a 40-27 lead into half-time. TCU's Ashley Browning accounted for 12 points from the arc for the Horned Frogs.
TCU came out in the second half and shut down the Houston offense in outscoring them 38-26. The Horned Frogs dominated from outside the arc, nailing four three-pointers, en route to their 25-point margin of victory over the Lady Cougars.
In shooting 8-of-16 from the floor, sophomore Chandi Jones led Houston with 25 points on the afternoon, including nine points from the charity stripe. Junior Angela Curl had a team-high three steals and senior center Valerie Muoneke pulled down a team-leading six boards.
With the loss, Houston falls to 9-5 overall on the season, 0-2 against Conference USA opponents. They have dropped their first two C-USA contests this season and their last four regular season C-USA games overall since last season.
Houston returns home to Hofheinz Pavilion this week for their next three games. They first host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:00pm, then welcome C-USA foes Cincinnati and Louisville next weekend, with the Bearcats on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:00pm and the Cardinals on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2:00pm.
