Volleyball Falls at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Jennifer Wittenburg blasted 19 kills and added 12 digs to lead the University of Houston women's volleyball team but it would not be enough as Cincinnati handed the Cougars a 3-1 loss Friday at the Shoemaker Center.
With the loss, UH dropped to 5-6 overall and suffered its first Conference USA loss of the year to fall to 2-1 in league action. Cincinnati improved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in C-USA play. Jane Anne Karasek and Jenny Tanneberger each added 16 kills for the Cougars, while Gabi Carbone chipped in with 10 digs on the defensive front.
Houston jumped out 1-0 lead in the match after winning game one 30-23, but Cincinnati roared back to take the final three games.
After Cincinnati tied the game at nine-all in game one, UH scored the game's next four points and would never trail again. The Bearcats pulled to within two points at 25-23 late, but Houston ended the game with the final five points to capture game one by a 30-23 margin. Houston was buoyed in the first game by an amazing .556 attack percentage with 22 kills and only two errors in 36 chances as a team.
Cincinnati rallied to tie the game at one-apiece with a 30-26 victory in game two. Houston appeared to have the game in control after jumping out to a 20-17 lead. However, the Bearcats went on a 12-2 run for a 29-22 lead and then held off a late Cougar rally.
In game three, the Bearcats rallied from a 13-11 deficit to take an 18-14 lead midway through the game and never looked back.
In the fourth and final game, Cincinnati answered every UH rally and took control of the match for good after embarking on a 9-3 run late in the game.
Cincinnati (5-5, 2-1 C-USA) as led by Becky Stahl who tallied a match-high 21 kills. Trish Ladusaw added a match-high 23 digs.
The Cougars wrap up their road swing with a Conference USA match at 2 p.m. Sunday against Louisville. From there, UH returns home and will play host to nationally-ranked Hawaii in a 7:30 p.m. match Wednesday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
