LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Houston women's volleyball team dropped its second straight match Sunday with a 3-1 loss at Louisville in Cardinal Arena.
Senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg led the Cougars (5-7, 2-2 C-USA) with 28 kills and 22 digs for the 19th double-double of her Houston career. Jane Anne Karasek added 16 kills and 19 digs, while Jenny Tanneberger chipped in with 11 kills and 10 digs of her own.
After the teams split the first two games, Louisville (9-1, 4-0 C-USA) captured game three by a 30-28 decision but not before the Cougars staged a comeback. Trailing 26-23, UH took advantage of three straight blocks from Wittenburg, Karasek and Loure Dews to tie the score at 26-apiece.
The two teams split the next four points, but Louisville ended the game and took a 2-1 advantage in the match, thanks to a Cougar service error and a kill from Sonja Percan.
In game four, Louisville used a comeback of its own to take the match. After the Cougars had jumped out to a 27-25 lead, Louisville scored the match's next four points for a 30-27 lead and used a kill from Lesley Drury to win 30-28
Percan, who joined Wittenburg on the All-Conference USA preseason squad, topped the Cardinals with 22, while Anastasia Zaitseva added a team-best 16 digs.
UH now returns home to start its longest homestand of the season. The Cougars, who will play in the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion during four of their next five matches, begin their home stay when they play host to nationally-ranked Hawaii in a 7:30 p.m. match Wednesday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
