Cougar Volleyball Comes From Behind To Clip Rice 3-2

The University of Houston volleyball team rallied for a come-from-behind 3-2 win over crosstown rival Rice at the Owls's Crown Plaza/Rice Invitational held at Autry Court on Saturday morning (Sept. 1). After dropping the first two games of the match 30-22 and 32-30, the Cougars rallied to win the match by claiming each of the next three games by the scores of 30-24, 30-18, and 15-12. It is the Cougars first win of the 2001 season after starting the year 0-2 in Friday's action at the tournament.
Houston was paced by senior All-America candidate Jennifer Wittenburg who led all players with 28 kills and 28 defensive digs. The UH junior tandem of Jenny Tanneberger and Jane Anne Karasek both added 16 kills each and combined for a composite .294 hitting percentage. Karasek also added a career-high 19 defensive digs. True freshman Loure Dews came off the bench to spark the team in the final three games with eight kills, a .429 hitting percentage and a pair of blocks.
Rice was led by Rebeca Pazo (19 kills) and Elizabeth Davenport Pollock (17 kills). The Owls fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Cougars will conclude action in the tournament with a match against Samford. First serve is slated for 3:00 p.m.
