Manhattan, Kansas - In a meeting of Cougars vs. Cougars, the Washington State University volleyball team claimed a 3-0 win over Houston in the first match of the Kansas State Wildcat Tournament Friday at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas.
WSU's Holly Harris had 15 kills, hit .345, and had five blocks to lead the west coast Cougars to a 33-31, 30-26, 30-28 win. Houston fell to 2-3 while Washington State improved to 4-1. UH senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 22 kills.
Houston served for the win twice in game one but failed to convert at 29-27 and then 30-29. Game two was a tightly played contest with WSU ahead 26-23 but UH rallied to the game with three straight points. Washington State however pulled away for a 30-26 final. Houston had the lead in much of the third game, at one time up 21-15, but WSU battled back for a 30-28 win to claim the match three games to none.
The third game was played as the K-State officials were monitoring the local weather radar as a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect and the possibility of being evacuated to the locker rooms loomed. The storm, which dumped heavy rains on the area, stayed centered five miles to the north of the KSU campus.
