A graduate of Western Kentucky, Brian Gerwig came to Houston in May of 2019, after spending the previous two seasons with head coach David Rehr at Arkansas State. His main responsibilities with the Cougars consists of recruiting future student-athletes and training of middle blockers and outside attackers, and the scouting of opponents.
In 2021, Houston's outside hitters, led by Abbie Jackson earned All-American awards from VolleyballMag.com while also being named a first teamer on The American's all-conference list. Jackson ranked first nationally in total attempts (1,554), eighth nationally in kills (496) and 44th nationally in kills/set (4.03). Jackson ranked sixth nationally in points (582.0) and tallied the 31st most aces in the country (45).
In the middle of the court, Rachel Tullos earned The American all-conference accolades as a first-team selection after ranknig 46th natonally in blocks/set (1.23) and fourth nationally in total blocks (151).
Gerwig has helped produce one of the most high-octane offenses throughout the American Athletic Conference with Houston leading the league in kills (13.66) and assists per set (12.63) in 2020-21. Along with that, Houston's .220 attack percentage ranked second in the conference.
As a result of Gerwig's offensive schemes, Houston landed a program-record three First-Team All-Conference selections in 2020 in junior Kortlyn Henderson, sophomore Abbie Jackson and freshman Annie Cooke. On top of Jackson being a unanimous First-Team selection, Cooke was named The American Freshman and Setter of the Year as well.
In his first season with the Cougars, Gerwig played an intricate part in developing some of the best middle blockers in the American Athletic Conference. Spearheaded by freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos, who earned All-Conference Second Team honors in 2019, under Gerwig’s guidance, Houston tallied a total of 308.0 blocks, a mark that ranked third in the league and 23rd in the country.
As a result of his mentorship, Tullos finished her rookie campaign leading the league with 1.36 blocks per set. She also earned American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting a conference record 17 blocks in the five-set match against Cincinnati. That mark was just the fourth time since 2014 that a Division I player had recorded 17 blocks in a five-set contest. Tullos would finish 2019 with 185 blocks, third-most in the country.
PRIOR TO HOUSTON
During his time with the Red Wolves, Gerwig helped guide A-State to a combined record of 40-26 and the Red Wolves’ fourth-straight 20-win season in his first year. Under Gerwig’s direction, that same season found A-State sit third in the Sun Belt with 261 total blocks.
2017 also saw the Red Wolves slam home 1,658 total kills, a mark that ranked third in the conference and 36th in the nation. Behind a .219 team hitting percentage, Gerwig’s offensive schemes led to 13.59 kills per set, which ranked second in the Sun Belt.
Prior to his time with A-State, Gerwig spent four seasons as an assistant coach at George Washington, where the Colonials racked in 70 wins during that time period, including back-to-back 20-win seasons from 2014-15. While with the Colonials, Gerwig’s responsibilities included scouting and game planning.
Gerwig helped GW post a 10-4 mark in Atlantic 10 play in 2013, which were the most league wins for the school since 2002. That 2013 season also found GW win its first conference tournament match since 2006. With the help of Gerwig, the Colonials posted a 22-8 mark in 2014, including an 11-3 record in conference play and the program’s first appearance in the conference tournament championship since 2002.
Before his tenure at GW, Gerwig served as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky in 2012, which turned out the be the Lady Toppers’ most successful season in program history with their 33-4 record. With his focus primarily on defense and middle blockers, Gerwig helped coach a pair of All-Americans and the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
