Men’s Golf Finishes First Day at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

Cougars in ninth entering Sunday’s Final Round; Chi Chi Chen, Weibel tied for 16th at 2-under 138
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in a ninth place following the first day of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at Finley Golf Club on Saturday evening.
Opening the two-day, 54-hole event with a score of 282, the Cougars followed that with a 280 in the Second Round for a total of 562.
Senior Hudson Weibel and junior Chi Chun Chen were tied for 16th at 2-under 138 to lead the Cougars.
Weibel drained four birdies in each round on the way to back-to-back 69s. After opening with the 72 in the morning, the Taiwan native overcame a bogey at No. 2 in his first hole in the Second Round. Fortunately, that was the lone blemish on his scorecard in the afternoon.
Chen added consecutive birdies at Nos. 10-11 and sank two more birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 15-17.
Junior Grant Doggett was tied for 138th at 142 while sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen was tied for 53rd at 144. Senior Bryant Hiskey II was in 87th at 155 while senior Kevin An, playing as an individual, was tied for 83rd at 152.
Host #11 North Carolina held the first-day team lead at 531 with the Tar Heels' "B" team in second at 548. #27 Duke (550), #29 Texas A&M (551) and Nebraska (557) completed the Top Five with #42 UNCW (559), East Tennessee State (559), Elon (561), UCF (564) and Florida Atlantic (564) completing the Top 10.
North Carolina's Grant Roscich stood atop the individual leaderboard at 129 while teammate Nial Sheils Donegan was in second at 131. Elon's Drew Yeagley stood in third at 132 with Hampton Roberts (North Carolina B) and Bryan Kim (Duke) tied for fourth at 135.
The Final Round tees off at 7:05 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.

Hiskey begins the day off No. 10 at 7:10 a.m. (CDT) Sunday with Hsuan-Yi Chen (7:20 am CDT), Doggett (7:30 a.m. CDT), Weibel (7:40 a.m. CDT) and Chi Chun Chen (7:50 a.m. CDT) following. An will begin off No. 10 at 7 a.m. (CDT).

Following the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, the Cougars take their first steps in the postseason when they tee off at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 27-29.
The Cougars will then learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show, set to air at 4 p.m., April 29, on Golf Channel.
From there, Houston looks to compete in NCAA Regional play for the sixth consecutive season. NCAA Regionals play will be held May 18-20 at six sites across the country.
