Juniors Hsuan-Yi Chen & Sacha Ruiz among Top-25 leaders to pace Cougars; Final nine holes to be played Tuesday
The tournament was originally scheduled to begin Monday with 18 holes each day, but the threat of inclement weather forced organizers to start a day early.
After playing the First Round on Sunday, schools played 27 holes Monday with the final nine holes to be completed beginning at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday.
As a team, Houston posted a score of even-par 288 in the Second Round and was +2 through its first nine holes in the Final Round to stand in seventh in the 20-team field before play was suspended due to darkness.
Juniors Hsuan-Yi Chen and Sacha Ruiz were tied for 23rd at E to lead the Cougars in the individual standings.
Starting the Second Round off No. 3 on the 6,267-yard, par-71 Royal Ka'anapali course, Chen quickly moved under par with a birdie at the par-4 fourth hole but returned to even par with a bogey on the next hole.
Fortunately, that would be the lone blemish on the Taiwan native's scorecard for that session. He returned to red numbers with a birdie on the 460-yard, par-5 sixth hole and added another birdie at No. 9.
Ruiz posted even-par 71s in his first two full rounds and was at E through the first nine holes of the Final Round to join Chen in a tie for 23rd.
Senior Sebastian Gamboa was tied for 31st at +2 overall and was at -1 through the first nine holes of his Final Round, thanks to back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4-5 and again at No. 8-9.
Senior Grant Doggett was tied for 45th at +5 while sophomore Jayk Altic, who was playing as an individual, was tied for 68th at +8. Junior Brett Moore and freshman Miles Wennestam, who was making his collegiate debut as a freshman, were tied for 116th at +18.
Clemson held the team lead at -18 to finish Monday one stroke ahead of Georgia. TCU (-12), Kansas (-4), Oklahoma (-4) and Colorado (-3) rounded out the Top-Six leaders while Purdue (+8), East Tennessee State (+14), North Florida (+14) and UConn (+17) completed the Top 10.
Clemson's Hampton Roberts continued to hold the individual lead at -11 to stand one stroke ahead of Georgia's Grayson Wood. Oklahoma's Cayse Morgan was tied for third at -9 while Oscar Holm-Bredkjaer (Clemson) and Arthur Carlier (Kansas) were tied for fourth at -6.
