PREVIEW: Houston Hosts UTRGV on Senior Night

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Soccer team is set to host UTRGV at 7 p.m., Thursday from the Carl Lewis International Complex.

The Cougars (4-0-2) look to end non-conference play with an undefeated record for the first time in program history. Thursday's match will be the first time Houston and UTRGV (3-3) have met in the regular season. The Cougars hosted the Vaqueros in an exhibition match last season.

Following Thursday's match, Houston will recognize Lexi Gonzalez, Peyton Machado, Jada Gibson, Cameryn Maddox, Jaden Humbyrd and Logan Pilgreen for their achievements on and off the pitch.

University of Houston students can claim a FREE student ticket to all Houston Soccer matches by presenting their student ID at the ticket booth on game day.

Tickets for Thursday's match against the Vaqueros can be found here. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ with Matt Pedersen (play-by-play), Brooke Kirchhofer (analyst) and Vicente Garcia (reporter) calling the action. Live stats for the match can be found here.

LAST TIME OUT
Houston's match with SFA ended in a scoreless draw on Sunday evening. The Cougars recorded 27 shots to SFA's five and had 11 shots on goal. It was the second straight season where the Cougars and Ladyjacks ended with a scoreless draw (Aug. 22, 2024).

ABOUT THE COUGARS

Head Coach Ben Williams is in his first season leading the Cougars. Williams is just in his second season as a head coach in the college ranks.
Graduate Jaden Humbyrd, junior Kyrsten Kizer and sophomore Casey Maddox were named captains for the 2025 season as voted on by their teammates.
The Cougars feature a revamped roster as they welcome 15 newcomers to the team including 11 transfers and four freshmen.
Houston leads the Big 12 Conference with 152 shots taken. The Cougars are averaging 25.33 shots per game through six matches. Those 25.33 shots per game lead the nation.
The Cougars lead the nation in shots on goal per game averaging 12.83 per game.
Houston has 22 goals on the season with 14 different goal scorers.
With 22 goals, the Cougars have doubled their goal total from the 2024 season.
Adelhia Ghonda leads the Cougars with four goals this season
Houston has only given up one goal through its first six matches for the first time in program history.
Lexi Gonzalez was named the Big 12 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week. This marks the first Big 12 Conference weekly award for the Cougars.

UTGRV is 3-3 on the season.
The Vaqueros last match resulted in a 6-0 victory against Texas Lutheran on Sunday.
UTRGV leads the Southland Conference in goals this season with 19.
Goalkeeper Emilia Compian has started all six games for the Vaqueros this season registering three shutouts
Sophomore forward Lisa Elowsson leads the team with four goals.
Head Coach Mark Foster is in his fourth season leading the Vaqueros and has a 83-85-39 record in his coaching career (12th season).
