Texas A&M transfer will compete for the Cougars with one season of eligibility remaining
HOUSTON – Forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim has joined the University of Houston Women's Basketball program, Head Coach Matthew Mitchell announced Friday.
"We are thrilled about Amirah joining our family," Mitchell said. "She comes from a great basketball family. She has veteran experience, has played at the highest level which is going to be valuable for us. She fits the athleticism, mobility and explosiveness that we need in post players. She has some untapped potential that we are excited to help unleash."
The 6'3 forward joins the Cougars after spending the 2024-25 season at Texas A&M, where she played in 26 games and averaged 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in 2024-25.
Before Texas A&M, Abdur-Rahim spent three seasons at SMU, where she averaged 9.6 points per game and posted 5.4 rebounds per game from 2021-24. She played two of those seasons alongside assistant coach Anthony Anderson.
During her first season with the Mustangs, she suffered a season-ending knee injury in her first appearance of the season. Following her injury, Abdur-Rahim averaged 5.8 minutes per game over nine games during the 2022-23 season.
In her final season at SMU, Abdur-Rahim entered the starting lineup and averaged 11.3 points on 53.1% shooting from the field, 6.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. She led the American Athletic Conference with 50 blocked shots and posted five double-doubles.
Abdur-Rahim began her collegiate career at Notre Dame where she played in eight games, scoring a total of eight points and nine rebounds.
The Marietta, Ga., native was a 2020 Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State selection and an Atlanta Journal Constitution Class A Private All-State Honorable Mention at St. Francis High School.
She earned All-Metro First Team honors in the North Fulton district after averaging 14.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 blocks during her senior season. The forward shot 60.1% from the field during the campaign while leading the Knights to a runner-up finish in the State Championship Tournament.
As a junior, Abdur-Rahim was named to the espnW HoopGurlz Super 60 and averaged 12.8 points per game before an injury cut her season short.
The forward was a member of the track team, running the 200-, 400- and 800-meter relays as well as competing in the high jump and triple jump.
