Houston native joins Head Coach Matthew Mitchell’s squad with one season of eligibility remaining
HOUSTON – Guard Briana Peguero, a 2025 WNIT All-Tournament Team selection and 2023 NJCAA D-I All-America Honorable Mention, has joined the University of Houston Women's Basketball program, Head Coach Matthew Mitchell announced Friday.
"We are delighted to have Briana join us here at Houston," Mitchell said. "She's a hometown kid and the fans are going to enjoy cheering for one of their own. The point guard position is very important, and Bri brings incredible veteran experience and leadership. Our style of play is going to be very exciting and fast-paced, and she has all the tools needed to fit that system."
The 5'7 guard comes to Houston after spending the 2024-25 season at Troy, where she played in 38 games and averaged 10.6 points and 2.4 assists per game.
Peguero helped lead Troy reach the 2025 WNIT Championship game, where the Trojans fell to Buffalo, 88-84. Despite the loss, she was named to the WNIT All-Tournament team after averaging 16.2 points per game during the tournament.
The Houston native scored a career-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers, to lift the Trojans into the WNIT title game.
Before her time at Troy, Peguero played the 2023-24 season at Mercer, averaging 10.1 points and posting 2.3 rebounds per game. She reached double figures in 18 of 32 games and started in 23 contests.
Peguero began her collegiate career at Trinity Valley, where she played two seasons. She averaged 11.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. During the 2022-23 season, she led the Cardinals to a 34-3 record for the Region 16 Championship and a national runner-up finish. She earned NJCAA Division I All-America Honorable Mention honors and was also named to the NJCAA DI National All-Tournament Team, Region 16 All-Region Team and Region 16 All-Conference Team.
Peguero attended Jersey Village High School in Houston, where she won the 2019 6A District Championship as a sophomore. She was named to the 6A All-District First Team and earned McDonald's All-America honorable mention and Defensive Player of the Year.
