Maelynn Kim Leads Women’s Golf at Big 12 Championships

Sophomore fires 69 to tie for individual lead; Cougars in third in team standings entering Tuesday’s Second Round
HOCKLEY, Texas – University of Houston Women's Golf sophomore Maelynn Kim fired a 2-under 69 to stand atop the individual leaderboard following the First Round of the Big 12 Championships at The Clubs at Houston Oaks on Tuesday afternoon.
Kim drained a team-high five birdies to join Carolina Melgrati (Arizona) and Carla Bernat (Kansas State) in a tie for first following the first 18 holes.
As a team, #26 Houston posted a score of 288 and stood in third after the First Round. #29 Iowa State and #19 Arizona were tied for the first-day lead at 285 with #30 Oklahoma State (289), #31 UCF (293), #15 TCU (293), #8 Arizona State (294), #28 Kansas State (295), Cincinnati (299), Kansas (299) and BYU (299) completing the Top 10.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament features 10 of the nation's Top-40 programs, according to the latest Scoreboard by Clippd national rankings.
Starting her day off No. 10 on the 6,259-yard, par-71 course, Kim quickly moved into red numbers with birdies on each of the first two holes. After bogeys at No. 12 and No. 15 returned her to even park, Kim drained another birdies at No. 2 and made two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 5-7 to earn her place in the day's final standings.
Junior Moa Svedenskiold joined Kim among the Top-10 leaders after posting a score of 72, thanks to four birdies, and was tied for 11th.
Junior Natalie Saint Germain was tied for 18th at 73 while junior Alexa Saldana was tied for 27th at 74. Senior Hyeonji Kang was tied for 58th at 78.
The tournament continues with the Second Round on Wednesday before wrapping up with the Final Round on Thursday morning.

The Top-Five teams at each NCAA Regional site advance to the NCAA Championships, set for Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 16-21.
