
Women’s Basketball Drops Saturday Game Against #18/18 West Virginia

Cougars fall to Mountaineers in lone regular season meeting
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program fell to #18/18 West Virginia, 79-51, on Saturday inside Fertitta Center.
The Cougars (5-19, 1-12 Big 12) were led in scoring by redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke with nine points and four assists as Houston dropped its seventh-straight game this season. Graduate guard Laila Blair posted 10 points and dished out five assists for her 17th game this season with 10 or more points.
West Virginia (19-4, 9-3 Big 12) had four players in double figures, led by senior guard JJ Quinerly's 20 points.
Both teams started the game slow with West Virginia taking an early 4-0 lead. Following the media timeout, the Mountaineers scored 16 points as the Cougars were unable to score. Fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland scored Houston's first basket at 1:12 followed by another layup as the Cougars trailed 25-4.
Houston was able to outscore West Virginia 14-12 in the second quarter. Sophomore guard Summer Bostock and Blair initiated the Cougars' first run of the game with back-to-back 3-pointers. Another 6-0 Houston run helped trim the deficit to 14, but West Virginia fired back with five points to lead 37-18 at the half.
West Virginia had a strong third quarter as it held Houston to 13 points and increased its lead by 30. Blair picked up her fourth foul early in the quarter, forcing Houston's remaining five available players to play most of the quarter without a break.
The Cougars and Mountaineers had a close fourth quarter, but Houston was able to outscore West Virginia, 20-18. The Mountaineers led by as many as 34, but the Cougars continued to attack the deficit. Bostock scored her second 3-pointer of the game to cut down West Virginia's advantage to 28.

Following Houston's mid-week bye, the Cougars will head to Boulder, Colo., to face Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. CT, inside CU Events Center.
