
Schiergen Paces Play Through 36 Holes at Border Olympics

Cougars in second, three strokes back entering Tuesday’s Final Round at Laredo Country Club
LAREDO, Texas – In its first team-scoring tournament of the spring, University of Houston Men's Golf is in second place through 36 holes paced by senior Laurenz Schiergen who is tied atop the leaderboard following the conclusion of Day 1 at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on Monday.
The Cougars carded a 7-over, 575 and trail tournament leader Louisiana (572) by three strokes entering Tuesday's Final Round. New Mexico State (576), Miami (Ohio) (579) and Michigan (579) round out the Top 5.
Schiergen is in a three-way tie in first among the 84-player field following his 2-under, 140. The Cologne, Germany, native tapped in six birdies on the day and posted an eagle down the stretch of his Second Round, while setting a 36-hole career low, besting his 146 at the Houston Classic on Feb. 7, 2022. His Opening Round 69 also matched his career low round at the Washington County Invitational on Sept. 6, 2021.
Junior Hudson Weibel is in a three-way tie for 11th and just four strokes off the lead following a 2-over, 144. The Dallas, Texas, native has finished inside the Top 5 in each of his last two events including capping his fall with a career-best second-place result at the White Sands WVU Invitational.
As part of the jam-packed field, three Cougars sit in a 12-way tie for 19th at 4-over, 146, including sophomore Chi Chun Chen, who matched the low mark among the field on the course's Par 5s at 4-under, joining Lipscomb's Minas Manias and Sam Potter.
Senior Wolfgang Glawe went 2-over in each round to join Chen with a 36-hole total of 146. Glawe's 1-over on the course's Par 4s ranked tied for eighth among the field. The St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native is seeking his third Top 20 finish in four events this season.
Sophomore Grant Doggett (146) leads the course's four individual competitors and joins Chen and Glawe in a tie for 19th overall. The Beach City, Texas, native rebounded nicely from an Opening Round 76, trimming six strokes off his score including birdies on two of his final three holes as part of a 1-under, 70, Second Round.
Senior Jacob Borow is just one stoke back of Doggett & co., at 5-over, 147, as part of a nine-way tie for 31st. The Lake Jackson, Texas, native tapped in birdies on two of his final three holes of the day.
Schools will conclude the two-day, 54-hole event with the Final Round shotgun start at 8 a.m., Tuesday.
