Houston student-athletes earn high marks for 2018-2019 freshman cohorts
HOUSTON – University of Houston's academic standard continued with this year's NCAA Graduation Success Rate report showing the Cougars' consistent climb over the past eight years with a second-straight year of 82%.
The achievement marks a second-straight school record 82% GSR and a 26-point rise over the last 20 years. Houston's GSR has been above 80 for six of the last seven years.
The Graduation Success Rate, calculated as the four-year average of student-athlete cohorts who complete degrees within six years, now reflects data from the 2018-19 entering class through this year's report.
Houston's Men's Basketball team posted a 100% graduation success rate, pacing the department, while Soccer (97), Swimming & Diving (97) and Softball (95) posted GSRs over 90. 10 Houston programs posted percentages over 80, an increase from nine programs in 2023-24 and eight in 2022-23.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as a measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave their institution while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.
Houston's GSR accomplishment comes after a historic milestone in academic performance with a 3.26 GPA for cumulative single-season school record for all sport programs following the 2025 spring semester. The achievement marked the fourth consecutive cumulative department-wide GPA of 3.0 or higher, setting a new standard for academic excellence.
