Longtime Supporter Darryl Schroeder Dies at 80

Houston graduate, Cougar supporter gave lead gift for baseball facility
HOUSTON – Houston Athletics is saddened by the passing of longtime supporter and University of Houston graduate Darryl Schroeder on Thursday night, his family announced.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Darryl Schroeder, a man whose devotion to Houston Athletics spanned 20+ years," Vice President for Athletics Eddie Nuñez said. "Darryl's generosity and his loyalty helped shape not only Houston Baseball but also Football, Basketball and all our programs. Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time, and we are grateful for everything he gave to this University, the Athletic Department and the community."
The namesake of Houston Baseball stadium, Schroeder Park, Darryl was a staunch supporter of Houston Baseball as well as other Houston programs. Schroeder generously supported Houston Athletics since 2003 and was a Huddle Club, and Coaches Committee member and was influential in both the development of TDECU Stadium, the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility, the Baseball Development Facility and the Memorial Herman Football Operations Center.
"Darryl was a believer in our program from Day One," Men's Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said. "He went over and beyond for the Cougars throughout his life. He was loyal, he was generous and he was committed to the University of Houston. Rest easy, my friend. May God continue to bless Darryl and his family."
"I was sad to hear about Darryl's passing and my staff and I send our deepest condolences to his family," Football Head Coach Willie Fritz said. "Darryl was a loyal Cougar and his generosity to not only the football program but the athletics department has been felt for decades."
"I only had the pleasure of meeting Darryl one time, but I was blown away by how down to earth he was. His love for the baseball program and the University was very evident," Baseball Head Coach Will Davis said. "I am hopeful that we can develop a team that he would be proud of."
Schroeder was the CEO of Maverick Development & Construction, LLC and the former CEO of LoneStar Energy Fabrication and had just celebrated his 80th birthday in April. A proud Houston graduate, Schroeder once said, "Every graduate needs to understand that our success is a result of the education we received not just from the courses and professors, but the culture of entrepreneurship that has always been the trademark of our University.
"It is the responsibility of every alumni to give back to our institution that helped make us a success in order for the University of Houston to continue its rise as a nationally-recognized, Tier One POWERHOUSE. Athletics plays an important role as it brings national attention and allows people to see what a fine University we have here in Houston."
