Houston steals a set from BYU but comes up short in its upset bid
PROVO, Utah – The Houston Volleyball team fell in four sets to #21 BYU, its fifth ranked opponent of the year, at Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
A trio of Houston players posted double-digit kills to lead the offensive effort. Senior Bre Reid led the team with 11 while redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales and senior Avery Shimaitis each tallied 10. Defensively, senior Alana Torres-Rivera paced Houston with 13 digs, narrowly missing a double-double with nine assists, while redshirt senior Barakat Rahmon and Shimaitis tied for the team lead with three blocks apiece.
BYU claimed an early edge to start the match. The host team won nine of the first 15 points to claim the lead then extended it to 10 at 18-8. Houston used a 3-0 run to shrink the deficit, but BYU shut the door on a comeback in the first, winning 25-17.
Both teams kept it close in the second set. Houston won the first three points, but ultimately the teams saw five ties as the frame locked up at 10-10. A 5-2 run put BYU in front, but Houston clawed back to tie it at 19-19. Another 3-0 run put BYU near a set win before Houston won four points in a row to force a set point at 24-23. While BYU fought off the set point and brought one of their own, Houston closed the frame with a 3-0 stretch to win the set, 27-25, and even the match at one set each.
Houston added to its momentum by winning four of the first six points to start the third, but BYU used a 4-0 run to claim the edge then never ceded the advantage again. A 4-0 stretch for BYU pushed its edge to 17-10, and the home team used the advantage to cruise to a 25-19 set win.
The hosts continued to control play in the fourth. After each team took six of the first 12 points, BYU won four of the next five to earn the lead. Houston nearly tied it at 11-10, but BYU used a 5-1 stretch to reestablish its edge. Ultimately, BYU would go on to win the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
