
De La Fuente Continues Ascent, Finishes 13th at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

Houston senior paces program during Final Round from Floridian National Golf Club
PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston Men's Golf senior Santiago De La Fuente continued his remarkable season and movement up the leaderboard at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, firing a Final-Round 67 to finish tied for 13th from Floridian National Golf Club on Tuesday.
De La Fuente, who vaulted 12 spots up the leaderboard during his Second Round on Monday continued the trend Tuesday, advancing 14 spots against a decorated field which featured 11 programs ranked inside the Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll Top 25. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native finished at 2-under, 211, helped by four birdies and an Eagle on Tuesday.
Houston junior Laurenz Schiergen concluded his strong tournament with a Final-Round 71 to finish in 15th overall and second among individual competitors at 1-under, 212. The Cologne, Germany, native turned in his best 54-hole score since March 6-7, 2023, at the Colleton River Collegiate (211) while at Kansas State. Schiergen tapped in four birdies on Tuesday.
As a team, the Cougars improved each round including shaving nine strokes off during their Final Round to finish 14th at 20-over, 872. Houston moved past rv Ohio State while producing the eighth-lowest round (2-under, 282) on Tuesday.
#10 Florida State took home both the team championship and individual title. The Seminoles carded a 19-under, 833, to hold off #3 Vanderbilt (15-under, 837) whose 12-under, 272, on Tuesday marked the best round by any team during the event. #4 Arizona State (842), #14 Arkansas (843) and #13 Oklahoma (852) rounded out the Top 5. Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton maintained his lead, winning the event by five strokes at 9-under, 199.
Houston junior Wolfgang Glawe (218) finished in 46th followed by freshman individual competitor Grant Doggett (219) who surged 18 spots up the leaderboard during his Final Round to finish 51st. Junior Jacob Borow (220) took 57th, super senior Austyn Reily (224) finished 72nd and freshman Chi Chun Chen (226) took 78th.

Houston will head west to compete at the Thunderbird Intercollegiate at Papago Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz., on April 12-13. That will be the team's final regular-season event before heading to the Big 12 Championships which run April 22-24 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Hockley, Texas.
