Volleyball Takes Down Cincinnati in Four Sets

Cougars recover after dropping first set in extra points, seal four-set victory at home
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team shined against its long-time conference rival, defeating Cincinnati in four sets on Alumni Weekend at Fertitta Center on Friday night.
The Cougars (10-10, 5-5 Big 12) had contributors throughout the lineup. Senior Katie Corelli led Houston hitters with 18 kills and a .600 hitting percentage, her 30th career match with double-digit kills. Graduate Kate Georgiades continued her hot hand defensively with 31 digs, averaging 7.75 per set while also adding seven assists and a perfect 13-for-13 mark on service receptions.
Redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon participated in all 10 blocks against Cincinnati (12-9, 3-7 Big 12), the first time a Cougar tallied double-digit blocks since Rachel Tullos earned 12 against South Florida on Oct. 9, 2022. Adding to the team's success, redshirt freshman Ashlyn Bellamy posted career highs with 12 kills and three blocks.
While the first set remained close early, Cincinnati used a 3-0 run to claim the lead at 11-8. The Bearcats continued to hold the edge through the midpoint of the set, however the Cougars clawed back to even the frame at 19-19. Back-to-back points put Cincinnati back in front, but Houston recovered and again tied the set at 23-23. After fighting off a set point, Houston forced extras and nearly took the set at 25-24, but a 4-1 run for Cincinnati clinched the opening frame, 28-26.
The Cougars dominated throughout the second. Winning the first seven points, including a pair of service aces from freshman Lily Barron, Houston forced Cincinnati to use both of its timeouts within 16 points as the Cougars claimed a 10-point lead. Houston continued to control play, cruising to a 25-9 set win as Corelli went a perfect 5-for-5 on attacks and the Cougars held the Bearcats to a -.152 hitting percentage.
Cincinnati took an early lead in the third, but Houston managed to even the score at 6-6. The Cougars then took the lead, using a 5-0 run to claim a 14-10 advantage and continued to hold the lead for the rest of the set, shutting the door on a late Bearcat surge to take the third, 26-24.
The Bearcats again claimed a quick advantage in the fourth, winning nine of the first 15 points. Houston recovered to even the frame at 15-all and on the back of a 5-0 run, claim a 17-15 edge. The lead held for the remainder of the match as Houston used a 25-21 set win to take a 3-1 victory.
NOTABLES
· Graduate Angela Grieve recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. The 11 kills also marked her 90th career match with double digits in the category.
· The second set marked the second time this season Houston held an opponent to less than 10 points in a non-fifth set.
· Georgiades clinched her 120th career match with 10-or-more digs, her 10th with 20-or-more and her eighth with 30-or-more.
· Houston is 5-1 this season when the team wears white and the libero wears black.

Houston is back on the road for a match, heading to Iowa State for a midweek tilt on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. before returning to Fertitta Center to battle Texas Tech, debuting the team's Houston Blue uniforms, with a 2 p.m. start on Nov. 9.
