
Men’s Golf Splits Matches at Big 12 Match Play Tournament

Senior Wolfgang Glawe, junior Hudson Weibel earn two wins in matches vs. West Virginia and Kansas State
HOCKLEY, Texas – University of Houston Men's Golf senior Wolfgang Glawe and junior Hudson Weibel each posted a pair of wins to lead the Cougars during the second day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at Houston Oaks Country Club & Retreat on Tuesday.
With the wins, Glawe and Weibel each improved to 3-1 during the three-day tournament on the 7,007-yard, par-71 course.
As a team, the 11th-seeded Cougars posted a 1-1 record with a 3-1-1 win over (14) West Virginia to complete pool play before falling 3-2-0 to (10) Kansas State.
The tournament wraps up with the final match on Wednesday morning.
(11) Houston 3, (14) West Virginia 1, 1 tie
Glawe won his second match of the tournament with a 3&1 win over Pierce Grieve. Starting on No. 16, he won each of the first two holes and never trailed.
Grieve pulled to within one midway through the match, but Glawe won No. 9 and No. 11 to push his advantage back to 3 up.
Weibel added another big win to his record book with a 5&4 victory over Ryan Leach. The Dallas native took a 1 up lead on his fourth hole at No. 2 and won back-to-back holes at Nos. 7-8 and at Nos. 10-11 for the final margin of victory.
Sophomore Grant Doggett earned his first Big 12 Match Play win with a 2&1 victory over Todd Duncan. Starting off No. 18, Doggett was tied through six holes before winning two of three holes at Nos. 6-8.
Duncan trimmed the deficit to one down at No. 9 and again at No. 15, but the Beach City, Texas, native won No. 16 to end the match.
Senior Jacob Borow tied for the second time in the tournament in his match against Kalen Wilson while senior Laurenz Schiergen dropped a 2&1 decision to Max Green.
(10) Kansas State 3, (11) Houston 2
In the afternoon session, Weibel won each of the first two holes starting on No. 15 and never looked back in taking a 5&3 win over Ian McCrary.
McCrary pulled to within a hole at No. 17, but Weibel won at No. 2 and then won back-to-back holes at Nos. 5-6 to break the match open.
Starting off No. 15, Glawe also jumped to a quick start, winning each of the first two and three of the first five holes against Erik Holmberg.
However, the Kansas State star rallied to tie the match with only two holes left to play. Fortunately, Glawe won the last two holes to clinch the match.
Schiergen fell 1 down to Nicklaus Mason while Doggett dropped a 5&3 decision to Kobe Valociek. Borow fell 2&1 to Fionn Dobbin.
