Volleyball Nearly Completes Comeback, Drops Heartbreaker to #22 TCU

Cougars rally from down 2-0 to force fifth but fall in five to #22 Horned Frogs
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team rallied after dropping the first two sets to force a fifth but fell to #22 TCU inside Fertitta Center on Wednesday night.
Graduate outside hitter Angela Grieve picked up her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, pacing the Cougars (6-7, 1-2 Big 12) offense with 17 kills while also adding 14 digs. Graduate libero Kate Georgiades clinched her fifth 20-plus dig performance of the season (49th of her career) with 20 against the Horned Frogs (10-3, 2-1 Big 12) while senior outside hitter Julianna Dalton recorded her first double-digit dig performance as a Cougar with 10. Dalton also added four blocks, including two solo stops, in the match.
Graduate setter Annie Cooke nearly missed out on a double-double with 25 assists and nine digs. Senior Katie Corelli continued her success from the right side this season, tallying her eighth double-digit kill of the year with 11.
Redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon used a 9-2-23 line to hit .304 in the contest while also adding a team-best five blocks. Overall, the Cougars tallied nine stops in the frame as six different players recorded a block.
TCU jumped out to an early 7-3 lead to begin the match. Houston rallied to tie the first at 10-10 and 11-11, but a 6-1 stretch put the Horned Frogs in front for good, allowing TCU to clinch the opener, 25-21.
Sustaining the momentum from the first set, TCU won the first four points of the second and never allowed the Cougars to tie after, winning the frame, 25-19.
Houston rallied back in the third set. After splitting the first 10 points evenly, the Cougars used a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. After continuing to hold off TCU through the middle of the set, the Horned Frogs managed to tie the frame at 19-19 and 20-20, but the Cougars claimed the third on a 5-1 run to win, 25-21.
Houston continued to hold momentum into the fourth. Winning 10 of the first 15 serves, the Cougars further extended their lead with a 5-1 stretch, giving Houston enough space to win the set, 25-19, and force a decisive fifth frame.
The Cougars and Horned Frogs traded blows through the first half of the final set, splitting the first 14 points. TCU took an 8-7 lead to force the media timeout and side swap, then used a 7-0 run to close the door on a Cougar comeback, winning the set, 15-7, and the match, 3-2.
NOTABLES
· With two aces in the match, Georgiades moved into sole possession of eighth on Houston's all-time service aces list with 101. She passed Emily Leffers who tallied 100 between 1993-1997.
· Dalton's double-digit digs effort was the fifth of her career.
