Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Schooner Fall Classic

Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold shoots 67 for second time in three days to tie for seventh and lead Coogs
NORMAN, Okla. – For the second time in three days, University of Houston sophomore Moa Svedenskiold fired a 3-under 67 to lead the Cougars in the Final Round of the Schooner Fall Classic and earn her second straight Top-10 finish to open the season on Monday afternoon.
Playing one student-athlete down due to illness, the 20th-ranked Cougars recorded their second straight sub-par round as a team, finishing with a score of 2-under 278, to finish fourth with a three-day total of 838 on the 6,182-yard course.
Starting her day off No. 1, Svedenskiold moved under par with her first birdie on the par-4 second hole and closed her front nine with a birdie at No. 9. Following five straight pars to start her back nine, the Halmstad, Sweden, native drained her final birdie of the tournament at No. 15 to finish at 6-under 204 and tie for seventh.
Sophomore Alexa Saldana and freshman Maelynn Kim tied for 17th at even-par 210. After starting with a birdie on No. 3, Kim overcame back-to-back bogeys as Nos. 7-8 to sink birdies on two of her next four holes to finish under par and collect a personal-best finish in her young collegiate career.
Senior Nicole Abelar tied for 34th at 214 after shooting 70 in Monday's Final Round. Playing as an individual, junior Hyeonji Kang tied for 43rd at 215 and joined Svedenskiold and Kim in red numbers with a 69 Monday. Freshman Ellen Yates sat out the Final Round due to illness.
Wake Forest captured the team title with a score of 811 to finish 22 shots ahead of Virginia Tech. Purdue came in third at 837 with Florida State (841), Oklahoma State (843), Tulsa (846), North Texas (847), Oklahoma (847) and Iowa State (850) rounding out the Top 10.
Virginia Tech's Morgan Ketchum earned medalist honors with a score of 9-under 201. Tulsa's Lilly Thomas finished second at 202 while Wake Forest teammates Rachel Kuehn, Mimi Rhodes and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra joined Florida State's Lottie Woad in a tie for third at 203.
Svedenskiold joined Maddison Hinson Tolchard (Oklahoma State) and Lois Lau (TCU) in a tie for seventh.

Following the Schooner Fall Classic, the Cougars tee off at the Illini Invitational at Medinah on Oct. 9-10 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill.
From there, Houston closes the fall season when it competes at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas, on Oct. 20-22.
Following the holiday break, the Cougars open their spring season when they play at the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Club in Nassau, Bahamas, on Feb. 12-13, 2024.
