Sophomore fires 2-under 70 in Second Round, tied for 17th overall entering Tuesday’s Final Round
MEDINAH, Ill. – University of Houston Women's Golf sophomore Alexa Saldana fired a 2-under 70- in the Second Round and was tied for 17th at 1-under 143 at the Illini Invitational at Medinah on Monday evening.
Competing on Course No. 2 at Medinah Country Club, Houston finished the first day with a score of 582 to stand in 10th on the 6,166-yard, par-72 course.
After shooting 73 in the morning, Saldana posted the Cougars' low round of the day with a 70, thanks to seven birdies. Starting off No. 5, the Mexico City native birdied three of her first holes in the afternoon and added three straight birdies at Nos. 13-15.
Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold posted a pair of even-par 72s and was tied for 25th at 144. The Halmstad, Sweden, has recorded eight straight rounds of par or better to open the season.
Junior Hyeonji Kang was tied for 38th at 147 while sophomore Natalie Saint Germain – making her season debut – was tied for 57th at 150. Senior Nicole Abelar was tied for 61st at 151.
LSU held the team lead after the first day with a score of 562 to finish six strokes ahead of Northwestern. Georgia (571), Mississippi (573), San Jose State (574), SMU (574), Ohio State (575), Oklahoma State (580) and Alabama (580) rounded out the Top-Nine leaders.
Cateria Don (Georgia), Darae Chung (San Jose State) and LSU teammates Latanna Stone and Ingrid Lindblad stood atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under 139. Ellie Szeryk (SMU), Isabel Sy (Illinois) and LoraLie Cowart (Georgia) were tied for fifth at 140.
Tuesday's Final Round begins at 9 a.m., Tuesday.

Saldana starts the day for the Cougars in the first group off No. 10 at 9 a.m. with Kang (first group off No. 11), Svedenskiold (second group off No. 11), Saint Germain (No. 12) and Abelar (No. 13) following.

MISSING in ACTION
The Cougars will be without the services of freshman Maelynn Kim, who has competed in each of the team's first two tournaments… but for a good reason.
During the summer, the Houston native and Seven Lakes High School product won the individual title at The Ascendant LPGA Benefiting Volunteer of America Girls Championship. For her impressive achievement, she earned an exemption into this week's The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America at Old American Golf Club in The Colony, Texas.
This season, Kim has posted a 70.33 scoring average with five rounds of par or better and earned a career-best 17th-place finish at the Schooner Falls Classic, thanks to a 66 in the First Round, on Sept. 23-25.
