Cougars tee off in postseason event on Monday morning at Southern Hills Plantation Club

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – The University of Houston Women's Golf program begins the 2023 postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Southern Hills Plantation Club on Monday morning.
Schools will play 18 holes each day through Wednesday, beginning at 7 a.m. (CDT), Monday, on the 6,289-yard, par-72 course.
The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives an automatic bid to NCAA Regional play, set for May 8-10.
This will be the first time The American Championships will be held at Southern Hills Plantation Club. The last two tournaments were held on Pinehurst #6 – Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.

MEET the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm, the Cougars will be represented by junior Nicole Abelar, freshman Moa Svedenskiold, freshman Alexa Saldana, super senior Annie Kim and freshman Natalie Saint Germain.
Competing in her first collegiate season, Svedenskiold leads the Cougars with a 71.89 scoring average and 16 rounds of par or better. The Halmstad, Sweden, native became the fastest Cougar in program history to win an individual title, capturing the Jim West Challenge in only her third event on Oct. 23-24, 2022.
Abelar stands second among the Cougars with a 72.58 average and has emerged during the second half of the spring season, leading Houston in each of th4e last two events with a season-best 66 in the Second Round of the MountainView Collegiate on March 18.
Saint Germain is another freshman in the Houston lineup and has made her impact felt this season. The Prague native set a school record with a 64 in the Final Round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Sept. 26, 2022, and ranks third on the team with a 72.78 average.
TEAM FIELD
The Cougars will compete in a 10-team field against student-athletes from #20 UCF, #28 SMU, #36 Tulsa, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Memphis, South Florida, Tulane and Wichita State.
PAIRINGS
For Monday's First Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Tulsa.
Saint German starts the day for the Cougars at 7:42 a.m. (CDT) off No. 1 with Kim (7:51 a.m. CDT), Saldana (7:59 a.m. CDT), Svedenskiold (8:08 a.m. CDT) and Abelar (8:16 a.m. CDT) following.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success at the American Athletic Conference Championships during the program's young history.
Houston captured team championships in 2016, 2018 and 2019 with All-American Leonie Harm earning medalist honors at the 2019 Championships on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.
The Cougars have earned Top-Three finishes in all seven previous American Championships appearances with Top-Two showings in each of the last four.
COUGARS in THE AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Abelar will be making her third conference championships appearances with her second in The American. She finished second at the 2022 American Championships with a score of 222 at Pinehurst #6 in North Carolina.
Before joining the Cougars, the Philippines native finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Championships with a score of 139 on the Hills Course at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., as a member of the Coastal Carolina team.
Kim will compete in her second straight American Championships. A year ago, she tied for 12th with a score of 225 at Pinehurst #6 in North Carolina.
Svedenskiold, Saldana and Saint Germain will make their inaugural American Championships appearances in 2023.
LAST TIME OUT
In their final regular-season event of 2022-23, the Cougars finished seventh with a score of 891 at The Bruzzy at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
Abelar led the Cougars with a two-day total of 218 to tie for 16th.
UP NEXT
Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars look to compete in NCAA Regional play.
The Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show, set to air at Noon, Wednesday, April 26, on Golf Channel.
NCAA Regionals will be held May 8-10 at six sites across the nation. Those locations include University of Georgia Golf Course (Athens, Ga.); PGA National Resort (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.); Palouse Ridge Golf Club (Pullman, Wash.); Lonnie Poole Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.); TPC San Antonio (San Antonio, Texas) and The Club at Chatham Hills (Westfield, Ind.).
Each NCAA Regional site will feature 12 teams and six individuals. The Top Four teams and top two student-athletes (not on an advancing team) qualify for the NCAA Championships to be played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 19-24.
