Four Cougars with sub-par rounds on way to school record low total in Final Round
DALLAS – Four University of Houston Women's Golfers posted sub-par round to lead the Cougars to a second-place finish and a team-record low round at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Nicole Abelar and super senior Annie Kim each fired 67s while freshmen Natalie Saint Germain and Alexa Saldana each carded 70s for a score of 14-under 274 on the 6,464-yard, par-72 course at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
That total topped the previous team low score of 275 in the Second Round of the Clover Cup on March 18, 2017.
Freshman Moa Svedenskiold finished with a score of 4-under 212 to lead the Cougars and tie for fifth. It was her team-leading fifth Top-20 showing in six tournaments.
Abelar began her Final Round with a birdie on No. 3 but returned to even par with a bogey at No. 6. She drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8 and added three birdies in a 4-hole stretch on Nos. 14-17 before capping her tournament with her final birdie at No. 17 to tie for 10th at 213.
Saint Germain sank three birdies in her first four holes of the day and finished with a 70 in the Final Round to tie with Abelar for 10th at 213.
Kim joined Abelar with the team's low round with a 67 and tied for 14th at 214. Starting her day off No. 5, Kim moved over par with a bogey on the par-3 eighth hole. However, the Seoul native quickly moved into red numbers with four birdies and an eagle on the 265-yard, par-4 14th hole on Nos. 12-16. She added her final birdie of the tournament at No. 2.
Beginning her Final Round off No. 4, Saldana struggled early with a pair of bogeys to stand at +2 through 10 holes. However, the Mexico City native drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15 and added her third birdie in a 4-hole stretch on No. 17 before ending her tournament with a birdie on No. 3 to finish with a 70 and tie for 25th at 216.
Host and 31st ranked SMU captured the team title with a score of 840. South Florida (852), #42 Tulsa (859) and UIW (862) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
UTSA's Camryn Carreon posted a 65 in Tuesday's Final Round and earned medalist honors with a score of 202 to finish one shot ahead of Tulane's Carla Bernat. SMU's Ellie Szeryk finished third at 205 with South Florida's Juliana Camargo finishing fourth at 210.

Following the Trinity Forest Invitational, the Cougars head west to compete at the MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Country Club in Saddlebrooke, Ariz., on March 17-19.
From there, the Cougars wrap up their regular season when they tee off at The Bruzzy in Ardmore, Okla., on April 1-2.
