
Women’s Golf Tied for 4th after ICON Invitational First Day

Senior Annie Kim shoots 2-under 142 to lead Cougars and tie for 16th; Final Round on Tuesday
HUMBLE, Texas – The University of Houston Women's Golf program stood in in a tie for fourth place during the first day of the ICON Invitational at Golf Club of Houston on Monday evening.
The Cougars posted a team score of 289 in the morning round and followed that with a 290 in the afternoon session to join Texas A&M and Texas Tech at 579 on the 6,392-yard, par-72 course.
Senior Annie Kim posted a pair of rounds of par or better and stood in 16th on the individual leaderboard at 2-under 142 to lead the Cougars.
Starting off No. 1, Kim moved under par with her first birdie of the day on the par-4 fourth hole but returned to even par with a bogey on No. 7. Fortunately, that would be the last blemish on her scorecard in the opening round.
The Seoul native made par on each of her first three holes to start her second nine and returned to red numbers with a birdie on the 478-yard, par-5 13th hole. Kim closed her First Round with a birdie on No. 18 for a 70.
Senior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 23rd at 145 and tied with Kim for the Cougars' low round of the day with a 70 in the afternoon.
Making her collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Brooke Morales was tied for 28th at 146, thanks to a 72 in the First Round, while senior Ariana Saenz was tied for 51st at 150. Sophomore Nicole Abelar was tied for 58th at 152.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Delaney Martin was tied for 47th at 149, while redshirt freshman Anna Economon – who also made her collegiate debut – stood in 76th at 164.
USC held the first-day lead at 551 to stand 16 strokes ahead of Illinois. Oklahoma State stood in third at 568, while Purdue (581), Tennessee (+8), Michigan State (+8), and Maryland (+9) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Texas Tech's Amy Taylor and USC teammates Cindy Kou and Amari Avery were tied for the individual lead at 8-under 136, while Illinois' Kornkamol Sukaree stood in fourth at 136.
The tournament concludes with the Final Round with an 8 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.

For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
Kim begins in the first group off No. 4 at 8 a.m., Tuesday, with Martinez (No. 5), Morales (No. 6), Saenz (No. 7), Abelar (second group off No. 8), Economon (first group off No. 18) and Martin (first group off No. 18) following.

Following the ICON Invitational, Houston will compete at the MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Country Club in Tucson, Ariz., on March 18-20 before playing in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on March 25-27 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
