HOUSTON – Houston Baptist Volleyball Assistant Coach Molly Howard Gerwig, wife of Houston Volleyball Assistant Coach Brian Gerwig, passed away Friday after fighting stage IV neuroendocrine colon cancer. She was 27 years old.
Houston Volleyball will honor the family with its #Fight4Molly match at 7 p.m., Friday against SMU inside the Fertitta Center.
"We are saddened by the loss of Molly Howard Gerwig," Houston Volleyball Head Coach David Rehr said. "Her impact on this world in her short life was extraordinary. She left an impact on the volleyball community and everyone she came in contact with. She will be missed by her friends and family, and she will always be remembered and in our hearts."
The Gerwigs met at a volleyball tournament in Jonesboro, Ark., in 2018.
Shortly after meeting, Brian Gerwig followed Rehr from Arkansas State to Houston, and Molly Howard Gerwig accepted a coaching job at Tarleton State. The two were married on May 15, 2021, three days before her birthday.
A standout outside hitter at Harding University, Howard Gerwig notched 810 kills over her four-year career, including 377 as a senior in 2015.
The Marianna, Ark., native had 324 digs in her senior season and averaged 3.79 points per set the same year. Howard Gerwig majored in health and kinesiology at Harding.
Fans who make a donation of any amount to Molly and Brian Gerwig's GoFundMe page will receive a free ticket to the match by showing confirmation at the Fertitta Center Ticket Box Office located on the Holman Street concourse.
Howard Gerwig is survived by her husband, Brian Gerwig and her parents Thomas and Margaret Howard.
