DALLAS – The University of Houston Men's Golf program posted a team score of 6-under 278 in the Final Round and finished third at the Trinity Forest Invitational with a total of 17-under 835 on Tuesday.
Senior Logan Young drained four birdies and an eagle during a bogey-free round of 65 to surge into a tie for 17th at 211 at Trinity Forest Golf Club. He was one of three Cougars to shoot par or better Tuesday, joining junior Luke Long, who posted a 69 and tied for 12th at 210, and junior Alexander Frances, who tied for 17th at 213 after recording a 71 Tuesday.
Arizona State captured the team championship with a score of 822 with host SMU in second at 826. Rice (845), Little Rock (846) and UC Davis (852) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,4860-yard, par-71 layout, Young drained four straight pars before making eagle on the par-4 fifth hole. After another par, he made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8 and closed his front nine with a 32.
The Normangee, Texas, native started the back nine with three straight pars before making birdies on No. 13 and No. 15 in a three-hole stretch.
With his total, Young posted a career-low round, topping the 65 he recorded in the Final Round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Nov. 4, 2018. He also became the second Cougar to shoot a 65 at the Trinity Forest Invitational, joining teammate Matt Cole, who posted his total in Monday's Second Round.
Long tied with Frances for team-high honors with five birdies in Tuesday's play. He started the day with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and overcame two bogeys on the next three holes to sink three straight birdies on Nos. 5-7. He added another birdie on the 430-yard 10th hole to move into a tie for 12th at 210.
Like Long, Frances started his day off No. 1 with a red number and added birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 late on his front nine. The Stege, Denmark, native overcame a double bogey on No. 10 to make birdies on No. 11 and No 15 and tied for 17th at 211.
Junior Andrew Gibson joined Long in a tie for 12th at 210 after sinking three birdies in his final round, including back-to-back efforts early on Nos. 4-5.
Making his Houston debut, Cole tied for 60th at 216.
Arizona State's Alex del Rey earned medalist honors at 16-under 197 after shooting three straight rounds of 66 or better. SMU's Justin Thompson finished second at 202, while Arizona State's Cameron Sisk placed third at 205.
