MONTGOMERY, Texas – University of Houston senior George Gardner drained six birdies in a bogey-free Second Round to tie his career low with a 66 and tied for sixth after the first day at the Bentwater Intercollegiate at Bentwater Country Club on Monday evening.
Competing on the 6,799-yard, par-72 Miller Course, Gardner overcame a tough First Round, which saw him post a double bogey and six bogeys on the way to a 77.
Fortunately, the Southlake, Texas, native rebounded with an impressive total in the afternoon session. Starting on No. 18, Gardner made par and then birdied back-to-back holes on Nos. 1-2. After three more pars, he drained consecutive birdies for the second time in the round on Nos. 6-7.
Gardner added additional birdies on No. 12 and No. 16 to equal his low round, set during the Second Round of the Border Olympics on March 9, 2018. He joined Houston Baptist's Ransom Jackson and Sam Houston State's William Holcomb in the tie for fifth.
The Bentwater Intercollegiate was a recent addition to the Cougars' fall schedule with four student-athletes competing as individuals.
Making his Houston debut, junior Laurence Crea was tied for 19th at 149. Crea joined the Cougars after an award-winning two seasons at Prairie View A&M.
Sophomore Braxton Watkins and senior Zach Tracy were tied for 39th at 154.
Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian were tied for the team lead after 36 holes at 585. Sam Houston State stood in third at 587 with UT Rio Grande Valley (590) and Texas State (591) following.
UT Rio Grande Valley's Alex Summer held the individual lead at 136, while Oral Roberts' Philipp Pakosch stood in second at 141.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes, beginning with an 9 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.

For Tuesday's Final Round, Watkins will begin off No. 15 with Tracy (No. 16), Crea (No. 17) and Gardner (No. 17) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Bentwater Intercollegiate, the Cougars will take a break from their schedule before returning to action at the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook on Oct. 28-29 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
That tournament will be held on the same course as the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships in late April.
