Irvine posts sixth double-double of season
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team dropped its final midweek competition of the season, as the Cougars fell to Houston Baptist by a score of 3-1 (19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25) on Tuesday.
Â
Junior setter Abby Irvine paced the Cougars (5-7), leading all players with 36 assists and posting 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Senior libero Katie Karbo anchored the back row for Houston, recording a match-high 31 digs against the Huskies (6-6), the seventh time this season she's led all players in digs.
Â
Freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos put her strength at the net on display, as her seven blocks also led all players. She was joined by Irvine and freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson as those with multiple blocks for the Cougars. Jackson's three blocks on the night is a career high.
Houston 1, HBU 3
Set 1
After a back-row attack from Jackson pulled the Cougars to within one, the Huskies managed to go on a run, but it was a block at the net from Irvine and Tullos that kept Houston within striking distance and bring the score to 10-7. Once HBU stretched its lead to four, Houston was forced to call a timeout. The Cougars came out of the break strong, fighting to close the gap to a pair at 19-17, but the Huskies finished the set scoring six of the final eight points to win the frame 25-19.
Â
Set 2
The second set opened with senior outside hitter Megan Duncan recording her fourth kill of the night to push the Cougar advantage to two. After HBU tied it up at the midway point, neither team gave an edge as the score remained close until the Huskies went up 18-15, resulting in a Houston timeout. Even with the timeout, the Cougars were unable to stop the momentum the Huskies had built, as HBU went on to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 match lead at the intermission.
Â
Set 3
Houston came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as back-to-back aces from Duncan helped jumpstart the Cougars to an early 5-0 lead. After the Huskies narrowed the gap, Duncan recorded her third ace of the frame to push the Cougar edge back to three. Houston Baptist responded though, as a 7-3 run forced Houston to call its first timeout of the frame, leading 18-17. The Cougars prevailed nevertheless and went on to win the set 25-21 and force a fourth frame.
Â
Set 4
With the two sides battling it out to start the set, it was Tullos whose pair of kills kept Houston alive. She slammed one home to tie the score at 12 and later gave Houston a one-point edge with another kill. Her late efforts were not enough to carry the Cougars, as the Huskies went on to win the set 25-22 to seal the 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
Houston wraps up its 11-match road swing with three contests in Lubbock, Texas, at the Red Raider Classic from Sept. 20-21, where the Cougars will square up against Texas Tech, UTEP and Incarnate Word.
