Cougars look to officially open season at Rice
HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar Cross Country team will look to officially open its season with a crosstown trip to Rice to compete in the Rice Invitational on Friday.
ABOUT THE RICE INVITATIONAL
The Rice Invitational kicks off with the College Race at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by the Yahoo Race (open to all runners) at 5:50 p.m. Houston will hit the track for the women's 4,000-meter race at 6:15 p.m., with the men's 6,000-meter race immediately after at approximately 6:45 p.m.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Unable to compete at the Aggie Opener due to inclement weather this past month, the Houston Cross Country squad will officially open its 2019 season at the Rice Invitational.
Among the returners for the Cougars' women's squad are senior Meredith Sorenson and sophomore Regan Lobodzinski. Sorenson posted a team-best 21st-place finish at the Rice Invite last season. Lobodzinski finished 26th-overall at Rice last season, for the fourth-best finish on the women's team.
The Women's race will feature debuts by Houston newcomers; Darby Guant, Claire Meyer, Mariana Rodriguez, Camille Harris and Sondos Moursy.
On the men's side, Alan Elbana, Brandon Seagraves and Jamie Vega will compete as Cougars for the first time. New to the cross country squad but having competed previously during the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons for the Cougars, are Tyler Keranen, Zion Smith and Christian Gilmore.
The Men's race will feature veteran milers Devin Vallejo-Bannister, Devin Fahey and Gabriel Armijo. Fahey led the Cougars last season with an eighth-place finish at the Rice Invitational, followed by Armijo with a 10th-place finish and Vallejo-Bannister tin a 13th-place.
