Houston Women Win Rice Invite, Men Take Fourth

Six Cougars conclude meet with top-10 finishes
HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar Cross Country team officially opened its season at the Rice Invitational with the women's teaming securing a first-place finish, as the men's team finished in fourth-place with a pair of top-10 finishers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Unable to compete at the Aggie Opener due to inclement weather this past month, the Houston Cross Country team wasted little time getting back on track as the women's team won the meet and the men's team turned in a pair of top-10 finishes.
On the women's side, the Cougars notched four top-10 finishes and accumulated 37 total team points to win the team title. Meredith Sorensen led the team with a third-place finish at 13:57.89. The time marks a collegiate-best for the senior. Jahnavi Schneider collected a fourth-place finish, crossing the finish line with a collegiate-best time of 13:57.89, followed by freshman Darby Gaunt who concluded her Cougar debut with a fifth-place finish at 14:04.44. Regan Lobodzinski rounded out the top-10 for Houston with a tenth-place finish and career-best time of 14:25.84.
On the men's side Devin Vallejo-Bannister led the pack with a seventh-place finish at 20:02.99. Jemal Wote crossed the finish line at 20:05.83 to take tenth-place and round out the top-10 for the Cougar men.

The Houston Cross Country team will return to action Sept. 28 when the team travels to McNeese for the Lake Charles Toyota Stampede.
