Cougars move to 5-0 after four-set win over Shockers
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston Volleyball team continued its unblemished start to conference play, as the Cougars took down Wichita State in four sets (21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16) on Friday night.
Â
With the win, the Cougars (11-9, 5-0 American) have put together their best start to league action in 18 years and have now won their past three matches against the Shockers (4-13, 1-4 American). Friday's victory also marks Houston's sixth consecutive win in a row.
Â
Defense played a pivotal role in the win, as four different Houston players recorded 10 or more digs. Senior libero Katie Karbo tallied a match-high 18 digs, while senior outside hitters Megan Duncan and Claire Karsten posted 11 digs and 10 digs, respectively. Junior setter Abby Irvine recorded 15 digs, which ties a season-high. Houston's defense also posted 12.0 blocks, marking the fourth time the Cougars have reached double-digit blocks in conference action.
Â
Duncan (10 kills, 11 digs) and Irvine (39 assists, 15 digs) rounded out their performances with double-doubles. Freshman outsider hitter Abbie Jackson led the time with 16 kills, the 10th time she's tallied a team-high in that category.
Houston 3, Wichita State 1
Set 1
The Shockers quickly came out and scored four of the first five points of the match and after they stretched their lead to five, Houston was forced to call a timeout, trailing 10-5. Once Jackson slammed home a kill to bring the score within four, Wichita State responded with a run of its own to extend the lead to six. The Cougars managed to fight off three set-points, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as Wichita State took the set 25-21.
Â
Set 2
A kill from sophomore middle blocker Kendall Haywood gave the Cougars the early three-point advantage and as the Shockers began to climb their way back into it, an ace from Karbo kept Houston in the lead at 10-8. Once a block from Irvine tallied the team's only solo denial of the night, the Cougars maintained a four-point edge until Jackson sealed the 25-20 set victory to tie the match at one.
Â
Set 3
Jackson continued to pace the Houston offense in the third, as she slammed home one of her six kills in the set to put the Cougars out in front by four. After a block from Jackson and sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut put the Cougars ahead by five, Houston continued to flex its defense with another block to go up 19-10. That lead was all the Cougars needed to cruise to the 25-15 set victory and hold a 2-1 match lead.
Â
Set 4
It was all Houston in the final set of the night, as the Cougars grabbed the first lead and never looked back from that point. Behind 14 kills and siding out 82 percent of the time, the Cougars coasted to the 25-16 victory, which was capped off by Duncan's 10th kill of the match, to come out on top 3-1 against Wichita State.
