STANFORD, Calif. -- University of Houston junior Papito Gonzalez fired an even-par 70 for the second straight day to lead the Cougars in the Second Round at the NCAA Stanford Regional on Tuesday afternoon.
Starting his day off No. 10, the McAllen, Texas, native overcame a shaky start that saw him bogey three of the first five holes on the 6,727-yard, par-70 layout at Stanford Golf Course.
Fortunately, Gonzalez rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16-17 before sinking seven consecutive pars. Despite a bogey on No. 7, the 2017 All-American Athletic Conference honoree closed out his round with back-to-back birdies to move into a tie for 17th at even-par 140.
Fellow All-American Athletic Conference selection Michael Perras joined Gonzalez in the group at 140. Although he started his day with a bogey on No. 10, Perras stayed consistent as ever, sinking eight straight pars to close his first nine before making his lone birdie of the day on the 521-yard, par-5 first hole.
Although he made bogey on No. 2, Perras closed the round with seven straight pars. His 71 on Wednesday ended his streak of four straight rounds in the 60s in NCAA Regional play, dating back to the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional in Tennessee.
As a team, the Cougars finished with a score of 285 to slip two spots and fall into a tie for eighth with No. 33 North Carolina at 566.
Competing in his second straight NCAA Regional during his final collegiate season, senior Matt Scobie struggled early and stood at 5-over through 15 holes.
Fortunately, the Ajax, Ontario, Canada, native took advantage of the team's lone eagle of the day on the 539-yard, par-5 seventh hole and added a birdie on No. 9 to finish with a 72 and move into a tie for 32nd at 142.
Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy and true freshman Pryce Beshoory were tied for 66th at 151.
No. 9 Baylor posted a score of 15-under 265 in the Second Round to move into the team lead at 542. Host and fourth-ranked Stanford was in second at 549 with No. 27 Pepperdine (555), No. 15 Oklahoma (557), No 45 BYU (560), No. 21 Georgia Tech (560) and No 41 North Florida (560) rounding out the top-seven teams.
Ohio State was in 10th at 582 with UC Santa Barbara (586), Sacramento State (590) and South Dakota State (592) completing the field.
Oklahoma's Brad Dalke held the individual lead at 11-under 129 after posting a 64 on Wednesday. Stanford's Maverick McNealy stood in second at 132, while Baylor's Cooper Dossey and Matthew Perrine were in third and fourth, respectively, at 134 and 135. Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans enjoyed the low round of the day with a 62 to move into a tie for ninth at 138.

During its history, Houston has recorded one NCAA Regional team championship, four individual titles and nine top-five finishes.
The Cougars have enjoyed individual champions in each of their last two NCAA Regional appearances. Perras captured the championship at the NCAA Franklin Regional in 2016, and Blair Hamilton won the NCAA Lubbock Regional in 2015.
With his recent American Championship title, Perras became the first Cougar in school history to win NCAA Regional and conference championship titles during his career.
