AUGUSTA, Ga. â€" University of Houston junior Michael Perras fired a pair of sub-par rounds, including a 66 in the Second Round, to stand in second place with a score of 8-under 136 after the first day at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Saturday evening.
Competing on the 7,0005-yard, par-72 course at Forest Hills Golf Club, Perras opened Houston's regular-season finale with a 70 and was one of four Cougars to post par or better during the first 18 holes.
In the afternoon session, Perras drained five birdies with an eagle to lead the Cougars. Starting on No. 9, Perras drained a birdie to start his Second Round but gave that stroke back with a bogey on No. 10.
Fortunately, he rallied with two birdies on three of his next three holes and enjoyed an eagle on the 533-yard,17th hole. Following four straight pars, the Deer Park, Texas, native sank three straight birdies on Nos. 4-6 and then closed his day with three straight pars.
No. 16 Dylan Meyer of Illinois held the first-day lead at 11-under 133. New Mexico's Andrej Bevins and UCF's Bobby Bai were tied for third at 137 with four players tied for fifth at 138.
As a team, the Cougars were stood in fifth place with a score of 10-under 565. Houston posted a score of 5-under 283 in the morning round and bettered that by one stroke in the afternoon against a field, which features five of the nation's top-50 programs as well as the 17th ranked team in NCAA Division II.
No. 11 Illinois and New Mexico were tied at 557 with UCF (559) and No. 10 Wake Forest (562) ahead of the Houston. Host and 50th-ranked Augusta (566), No. 14 Oklahoma (566), Georgia State (571), No. 20 Georgia (572), Virginia Tech (573) and Tennessee (573) rounded out the top-11 leaders.
Perras was one of four Cougars to shoot a pair of par rounds or lower on Saturday. Sophomore Matt Williams (70-72) was tied for 27th at 2-under 142, while junior Papito Gonzalez (71-72) was tied for 33rd at 143 with freshman Pryce Beshoory tied for 39th at 144 (72-72).
Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy was tied for 66th at 150. Competing as an individual, senior Matt Scobie was tied for 43rd at 145.

FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
Sunday's First Round tees off with a 7:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 50 Augusta, beginning at 8:20 a.m. (CDT) off No 1.
Tracy begins at 8:20 a.m. (CDT) with Beshoory (8:30 a.m. CDT), Gonzalez (8:40 a.m.), Williams (8:50 a.m.) and Perras (9 a.m. CDT) following.
UP NEXT
This marks the 11th straight season in which the Cougars will compete at this tournament. In addition to facing some of the nation's elite programs, the team also enjoys watching professional golf at the end of the trip.
With the completion of Sunday's play, the Cougars will head to Augusta National Golf Club on Monday morning to watch the first practice rounds during the week of The Masters before flying home to Houston on Monday night.
Following the 3M Augusta Invitational, the Cougars enter the postseason when they compete on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Clearwater, Fla., on May 1-3.
