AWENDAW, S.C. â€" University of Houston sophomore Matt Williams posted a 2-under 70 in Sunday's First Round at The Hootie at Bulls Bay to tie for 12th and lead the Cougars at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
Starting the tournament on No. 1, Williams drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch midway through his front nine and added another birdie on No. 12 to move to 4-under through 13 holes on the 7,220-yard course.
Although he battled through a pair of bogeys during his final five holes, the Calgary, Alberta, native was the Cougars' leading performer on the first day.
Freshman Pryce Beshoory, junior Michael Perras and redshirt freshman Zach Tracy were tied for 35th with 72s, while junior Papito Gonzalez was tied for 78th at 77. Competing as an individual, senior Matt Scobie was tied for 46th at 73.
As a team, Houston posted a score of 2-under-286 to stand in seventh through 18 holes. Georgia State held the first-day lead at 277, while South Carolina was in second at 279.
Virginia (281), Mississippi (283), Auburn (284) and Purdue rounded out the top-six leaders with NC State (287), Kentucky (287) and Missouri (287) completing the top ten.
South Carolina's Keenan Huskey and Mississippi's Braden Thornberry stood atop the individual leaderboard with 66s, while Jimmy Stanger (Virginia), Nathan Mallonee (Georgia State), Ben Wolcott (Mississippi) and Benjamin Shipp (NC State) were tied for third at 67.
SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
Monday's Second Round begins with an 8 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with Kentucky and Missouri beginning off No. 10.
Gonzalez begins at 8 a.m. (CDT) Monday with Beshoory (8:10 a.m. CDT), Tracy (8:20 a.m. CDT), Perras (8:30 a.m. CDT) and Williams (8:40 a.m. CDT) following.

Following The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, the Cougars close out their regular season when they compete at the 3M Augusta Invitational on April 1-2 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
From there, the Cougars enter the postseason when they compete on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Clearwater, Fla., on May 1-3.
