LAREDO, Texas â€" University of Houston Men's Golf stars Michael Perras, Matt Williams and Zach Tracy finished among the top-11 leaders to help lead the Cougars to a second-place finish Saturday afternoon at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
Perras finished the rain-shortened event with a score of 138 to tie for fourth, while Williams tied for eighth at 140 on the 7,204-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club. Tracy earned his third top-11 finish of the season with a score of 141.
Perras and Tracy tied for the team's low round of the day with 70s. After starting the Second Round with a bogey on the par-5 first hole, Perras settled down with three birdies and 14 pars over the final 17 holes.
Tracy started his day on No. 3 and sank three birdies in a four-hole stretch on Nos. 8-11. Although the Houston native stumbled with bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17, he sank a birdie on No. 1 to finish with a 36-hole score of 141.
Williams enjoyed his second straight sub-par round with a 71. Starting the day with a birdie on No. 1, the Calgary, Alberta, native ran into trouble with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch midway through the Second Round. Fortunately, Williams rebounded, sinking three birdies over five birdies late in the round for a season-best finish.
Rain suspended play Friday with four teams still on the course and forced the cancellation of the Second Round, reducing the tournament to 36 holes.
Teams returned to the course Saturday morning to finish their First Rounds with the Second Round starting immediately after.
Campbell captured the team championship with a score of 559, thanks to an 11-under 277 in Saturday's Second Round. Houston finished second with a score of 564 after posting consecutive sub-par rounds, and UTSA finished third at 565.
Bowling Green (571), Little Rock (573), McNeese State (573), ULM (574), Stephen F. Austin (574), UTEP (575), Sacramento State (579) and Nebraska (579) rounded out the top-11 leaders.
Individually, Nebraska's Mike Colgate earned medalist honors with a score of 9-under 135. Campbell's Jesper Svensson and Bowling Green's Max Rispler tied for second at 136.
Playing as individuals, freshman Pryce Beshoory tied for 27th at 144, while freshman Tony Gil tied for 46th at 146. Senior Matt Scobie tied for 63rd at 149.
