LAREDO, Texas â€" The University of Houston Men's Golf program held a two-stroke First-Round lead of the Border Olympics when play was suspended due to rain Friday afternoon at Laredo Country Club.
All but four teams had finished their First Round when play was stopped Friday afternoon. UTSA, ULM, Louisiana and Rice will complete their First Rounds beginning at 7:30 a.m., Saturday.
Due to the weather, Friday's scheduled Second Round was cancelled. Teams will begin Final Round play after the First Round is completed Saturday.
This marks the second straight season in which the Border Olympics was shortened due to weather.
The Cougars finished the first day with a score of 278 to hold a two-stroke lead over UTSA, which will compete its round Saturday morning. Stephen F. Austin, Campbell and Sacramento State were tied for third at 282.
Junior Michael Perras posted a 68 Friday to lead the Cougars and stand in a tie for fourth. The Deer Park, Texas, native started his day with a birdie on the 582-yard, par 5 first hole.
After three straight pars, he drained another birdie on No. 5. Following his first of two bogeys on No. 6, Perras rallied with four birdies over the next five holes, including three straight to close out his front nine.
He added his sixth and final birdie of the day on No. 11 to join Mans Berglund (Lamar), Guillaume Fanonnel (ULM), Max Theodorakis (Cincinnati) and Ian Berrigan (McNeese State) in a tie for fourth.
Sophomore Matt Williams was tied for 11th after shooting 69. The Calgary, Alberta, native sank birdies on two of his first three holes to start his round well.
Junior Papito Gonzalez was tied for 18th with a 70. Standing at +1 through 12 holes, the McAllen, Texas, native used a late surge to move up the leaderboard.
Gonzalez made a birdie on the par-5, 13th hole and ended his day with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17-18.
Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy was tied for 28th with a 71, while senior Matt Scobie was tied for 49th at 74. Playing as individuals, freshman Pryce Beshoory was tied for 38th with a 73, while freshman Tony Gil was tied for 49th at 74.
