CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico â€" University of Houston junior Michael Perras posted a 66 for the low round of the day to surge into a tie for seventh with a score of 4-under-138 during the Second Round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate.
Perras enjoyed five birdies with an eagle and only one bogey in Monday's play to lead the Cougars. Starting on No. 10, the Deer Park, Texas, native drained his first birdie of the day on No 13.
After stumbling briefly with a bogey on the par-4 15th hole, Perras rebounded nicely with a birdie on the next hole. After three straight pars to start his back nine, he drained a birdie on No. 4 and added another birdie three holes later before capping his day with an eagle on the 595-yard, par-5 ninth hole.
As a team, the Cougars moved into a tie for eighth with No. 30 Florida State with a two-day score of 580. No. 10 Oklahoma State held the second-day lead at 16-under 552 to stand three strokes ahead of No. 19 Texas.
No. 11 Baylor (564), No. 46 Washington (568) and No. 18 Wake Forest (572) rounded out the top-five leaders in the tournament, which boasted 11 of the nation's top-50 programs.
Perras wasn't the only Cougar to break par Monday. Junior Papito Gonzalez finished with a 3-under 68 and was tied for 22nd at 42.
The McAllen, Texas, native started his day with a bogey on his first hole at No. 12 but rebounded with a birdie on the next hole and moved under par with another birdie on the par-4, 16th hole.
After slipping to even-par with a bogey on No. 1, Gonzalez sank six straight pars before making birdie on No. 8 and joining Perras with an eagle on No. 9.
Sophomore Matt Williams was tied for 49th at 148, while senior Matt Scobie and redshirt freshman George Gardner was tied for 65th at 152.
Competing as an individual, senior Emmett Oh was tied for 42nd at 147.
Texas' Steven Chervony held the Second-Round lead at 8-under 134 to finish two strokes in front of teammate Doug Ghim and Oklahoma State's Kristoffer Ventura. Corey Pereira (Washington), Gavin Hall (Texas) and Cristian DiMarco (USF) were tied for fourth at 137.

SPRING, Texas â€" Nine Cougars competed as individuals in the first two rounds of the Colin Montgomerie Invitational on Monday at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas.
Freshman Tony Gil fired back-to-back sub-par rounds of 71-69 and was in third at 140. After shooting a 71 in the morning round, thanks to two birdies in his final six holes, Gil posted five birdies and an eagle to go against four bogeys.
Starting on No. 8, Gil drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch (No. 15-18) midway through his afternoon session but slipped back to even par for the round with a bogey on No. 3. However, he ended his day on a hot note, sinking birdie on No. 6 and making eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy posted consecutive 71s Monday and was tied for fifth at 142.
Junior Joshua Gibbons posted the team's low round of the day with a 68 in the morning and stood in 11th at 144. Starting on No. 11, the Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, native, suffered a bogey on No. 14 but proceeded to sink four straight pars.
After another bogey on No. 1, Gibbons enjoyed consecutive birdies on Nos. 5-6 and ended his morning round with his seventh and final bogey on No. 10.
Junior Alan De Bondt was tied for 20th at 146, while freshman Pryce Beshoory was tied for 27th at 147. Making his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Sam Elkington enjoyed a five-stroke improvement in the afternoon round and was tied for 36th at 149.
Sophomore Logan Davis was tied for 40th at 150, while senior Matt Dunn was tied for 49th at 151. Sophomore Jacob Veerman was tied for 62nd at 153 with sophomore Carson Cavner in 82nd at 163.
