SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. â€" University of Houston junior Papito Gonzalez started his 2016-17 season on Friday morning with three straight birdies and finished his First Round at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate with a career-low-tying 67 to tie for ninth on Friday.
Gonzalez, who hails from McAllen, Texas, never fell below 2-under-par for the day on the 7,147-yard, par-71 course at Mirabel Golf Club. Although he suffered his first bogey of the season on the sixth hole, he rallied with five straight pars and drained another birdie on the par-4, 12th hole.
Gonzalez suffered his final bogey of the day on the par-3, 14th hole but closed out the day with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16-17 and added a par on his final hole to lead the Cougars. He equaled his career-best round set in the First Round of the Cougars' own All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 19, 2016.
Gonzalez was one of two Cougar to shoot under par in the season-opening round. Senior and three-year letterman Emmett Oh fired a 3-under 67 with five birdies in his round Friday
Oh, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada battled through a bogey on his third hole to sink four birdies in a five-hole stretch midway through his front nine.
After back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6, Oh made par on the par-3 hole but rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8.
Oh played steady on his back nine, draining eight pars with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole and was tied for 15th with a 68.
As a team, the Cougars finished at 3-under 281 to stand in eighth place. Kent State led all teams at 264 to finish the first day five strokes ahead of Baylor. Kansas (270), LSU (270), South Carolina (273), UAB (279) and Georgia Tech (280) rounded out the top-seven leaders with California (285) and Georgia State (285) following the Cougars.
Junior and 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional individual champion Michael Perras was tied for 51st with a 72, while sophomore Matt Williams was tied for 67th at 74. Senior and three-year letterman Matt Scobie was tied for 76th with a 75.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Jacob Veerman was tied for 86th with a 78.

PAIRINGS
For Saturday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Georgia State and UAB off No. 10.
Veerman begins the day at 8:50 a.m. (CDT) off No. 10. Scobie starts the Cougars' lineup at 1:10 p.m. (CDT) with Gonzalez (1:22 p.m.), Oh (1:34 p.m.), Williams (1:46 p.m.) and Perras (1:58 p.m.) following.
Tee times for Sunday's Final Round will be based on team standings after Saturday's round.
UP NEXT
Following the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, the Cougars return home to play host to the Bayou City Collegiate Championships on Oct. 10-11.
Houston will team with Sam Houston State and Rice to host the two-day, 54-hole event at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas.
