NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program was honored for its strong efforts in the classroom as it was named a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America on Wednesday.
The Cougars qualified as a Scholar All-America Team by posting a team GPA of 3.28 during the spring season, a spring best since 2013. Individually, 19 of the 25 members of the UH roster finished with a GPA of 3.0 or above, a 16 percent increase from last year. Additionally, every member of the team finished the season in good academic standing.
Team Scholar All-America awards are presented to college and university swimming & diving teams who have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the semester coinciding with the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. More than 80 percent of Division I teams had a 3.0 or higher GPA during the spring 2016 semester.
Overall, junior Rachel Hobbins posted the highest GPA on the Houston team, ending the semester with a perfect 4.00 mark.
Led by second-year head coach Ryan Wochomurka, the Cougars open the 2016-17 season in October.
