FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Although they moved up only one place in the team standings, the University of Houston Men's Golf program put themselves in contention with an outstanding Second Round at the NCAA Franklin Regional at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
The Cougars fired the Round's fourth-lowest team score with a total of 14-under-par par 274 to move into seventh place at 567. The score tied Houston's record-low team round in NCAA Regional play, equaling the team's 274 from the NCAA Lubbock Regional on May 14, 2015.
"We did a better job of attacking the course today. Yesterday, we were much to too timid. We addressed some things last night, and we knew we needed to turn it loose to get back in the mix," said Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his seventh year with the Cougars. "The guys came out of the gate and made some birdies early. We did a great job on the front nine of getting under par and did a great job of closing out the round."
More importantly, Houston moved to within five strokes of No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 47 Kennesaw State, who are tied for fourth at 562. Texas held the team lead at 539 to finish 17 strokes ahead of No. 26 Virginia with No. 14 LSU in third at 560.
With the completion of Wednesday's Second Round, the top five team and top individual not on those teams advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Starting on No. 10 on the 7,190-yard, par-72 course, the Cougars drained 12 birdies with only three bogeys on their front nine to build a wave of momentum.
Adding 10 more birdies on the back nine, the Cougars enjoyed a 19-stroke improvement from their First-Round score of 293 on Monday. It was Houston's second-biggest improvement in NCAA Regional history, trailing only the 25-stroke difference from the 1992 NCAA Central Regional First Round (307) to the Second Round (282) on May 21-22, 1992.
After battling through an 80 in Monday's First Round in his first action since Oct. 13, 2015, junior Matt Scobie was one of three Cougars to post scores in the 60s on Tuesday, firing a team-best 67.
The Ajax, Ontario, native drained four birdies in the final five holes of his front nine and added three more birdies on his back nine. He moved into a tie for 49th with a score of 147.
"Monday was my first round back in a while. To come out and put a good one together today was a good feeling," Scobie said. "I stuck to the game plan we set out. We wanted to be on the offense, and I was fortunate to make a few birdies."
Sophomore and 2016 All-American Athletic Conference Team honoree Michael Perras finished Tuesday's round with a 69 and was tied for third at 134. After shooting a Houston NCAA Regional record 65 during Monday's First Round, the Deer Park, Texas native enjoyed his second straight round in the 60s and was tied for third with Washington's Carl Yuan and Texas' Taylor Funk at 134.
Texas' Doug Ghim and James Madison Ryan Cole's tied for first at 133.
Like Scobie, senior Blair Hamilton overcame a challenging First Round and enjoyed the Cougars' second-lowest score with a 68 Tuesday. He recorded three birdies on the final six holes of his front nine and sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7 to move into a tie for 47th at 146.
Scobie, Hamilton and Perras became the first Cougars to post rounds in the 60s in one NCAA Regional round in Houston history.
Senior Vincent Martino was the fourth Cougar to shoot a sub-par round Tuesday with a 70. After a bogey on his third hole of the round, the Southlake, Texas, native enjoyed three birdies with 12 pars over his final 15 holes to move into a tie for 28th at 143.
Sophomore Papito Gonzalez stood in 69th at 152.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This marks the 19th time the Cougars competed in NCAA Regional play as a team with four individual appearances during their history. During that time, Houston has enjoyed one NCAA Regional team championship (1998 Central) and three individual titles.
A year ago, the Cougars earned the No. 6 seed at the NCAA Lubbock Regional. Tied after 54 holes, Houston defeated Purdue in a 1-hole team playoff to earn the fifth and final spot and advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.
COUGARS in NCAA REGIONAL PLAY
Hamilton is making his second appearance in NCAA Regional play and enjoys the most impressive resume among the current Cougars. Posting a score of 8-under-par 205, Hamilton finished as the 2015 NCAA Lubbock Regional co-champion, becoming only the third Cougars to win an NCAA Regional individual title.
With scores of 68-69-68, he also became the first Cougar in school history to post three consecutive rounds in the 60s in NCAA Regional competition.
Martino made his third appearance in NCAA Regionals this week. He tied for 30th with a score of 227 at the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional and tied for 22nd at the NCAA Lubbock Regional a year ago.
Perras, Scobie and Gonzalez are making their NCAA Regional debuts this week.
