HOUSTON - University of Houston swimmer Eleanna Koutsouveli placed 13th overall at the Mesa Arena Pro Swim Series competing against some of the world's best swimmers at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, Ariz., Saturday.
"I am proud of Eleanna's effort this weekend," said head swimming and diving coach Ryan Wochomurka. "She continued to battle and readjust to long course swimming."
The American Athletic Conference 100 and 200-yard backstroke champion, Koutsouveli had an impressive string of performance in Arizona. The Athens, Greece, native made consolation finals for the second night in row after placing 16th overall in prelims. The freshman touched the wall at 2:19.39, 7.51 seconds behind the leader from Hungary, five-time long-course world champion Katinka Hosszu.
In the consolation finals, Koutsouveli finished fifth in Heat B. She netted a time of 2:17.70, 1.68 seconds off her preliminary time.
"It was a great opportunity to race and learn from world class competition for her," Wochomurka said.
Koutsouveli's finals time, 1:17.70, is the second best time in her home country Greece.
