LAHAINA, Maui, Hawai'i â€" The University of Houston Men's Golf program bettered its First-Round score by 11 strokes during Saturday's Second Round but was unable to move higher on the leaderboard during the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Competing on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club, the Cougars finished Saturday's play at 1-under 283 for a two-day total of 577. However, the Cougars slipped into 11th place with their team score.
Junior Michael Perras posted the Cougars' low round of the day with a 2-under 69 Saturday. Starting on No. 7, Perras birdied the par-5 ninth hole but ran into trouble with two bogeys in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 10-13.
Settling down, the Deer Park, Texas, native sank five straight pars before enjoying his second birdie of the day on No. 1. After two more pars, Perras closed out his round with birdies on two of his last three holes to stand in a tie for 18th at 1-under 141.
Junior Papito Gonzalez joined Perras in a tie for 18th at 141 after posting his second straight round of par or better. The McAllen, Texas, native found himself at 3-over through three holes after a bogey on his first hole of the day at No. 6 and a double bogey on No. 8.
Fortunately, Gonzalez rebounded in an impressive way, sinking birdies on five of his next six holes, including four consecutive on Nos. 11-14. He eventually finished the day with a 70 to join Perras in a tie for 18th.
